Government consultation on the role of Biomass in achieving net zero ends Jun 23, 2021

The Government has given a call for evidence on domestic biomass fuel in supporting the UK’s net zero target.

A biomass fuel system can range from wood logs to various types of crops and all of these can be used to create energy, for example wood chips can be burnt in a biomass boiler to create fuel for a central heating system.

Currently the only available scheme for biomass boilers is the Domestic RHI, which grants quarterly repayments for energy generated over seven years.

Since the 2012 bioenergy strategy, biomass has played a prominent role in the Governments efforts to decarbonise the economy, however the context within which they use biomass has changed hence why the UK's leadership is looking system wide at how and where sustainable biomass can best be used to reach net zero.

Within the consultation the question of what alternative strategies would encourage uptake of current schemes for householders was put forward, along with a consideration of implementating further funding through grants and subsidies or renewable certificates.

This consultation is now closed, recommendations will be published shortly.
