YES Energy Solutions have backed a letter to the Government to save lives, create jobs and deliver warmer, healthier homes in the economic response to coronavirus.
The letter, signed by health professionals, elected officials and leaders in the housing and energy sector, urged for fast action to improve health outcomes and support the most vulnerable people who are at most risk of needless death and cold related morbidity this winter.
The prime minister has been asked to consider the even more severe risk this winter posses on health as a result of the additional threat from coronavirus.
The letter warns that if a second lockdown is imposed, there would be sharp increases in energy usage in poor housing as people are forced to stay home, leaving some unable to financially survive.
It also states that improvements in the UK's inefficient housing stock would help prevent hospital admissions.
YES are urging the Government to consider an energy efficiency retro-fitting programme as part of the economic recovery post-lockdown, creating jobs as well as improving the health of the most vulnerable.
Duncan McCombie, YES Energy Solutions' CEO, explained: "It is vital that the most vulnerable in our society are not left behind in the focus to rebuild the economy and recover from the coronavirus pandemic.
"The threat to winter health is larger than ever. The government must recognise this and dramatically improve the energy efficiency of households as a buffer against disease.
"There is an opportunity to build jobs in the energy efficiency sector to allow the UK to move towards a sustainable green economy that leaves no household behind."
