Springhill Court: A Collaborative Retrofit Success Story Jul 07, 2025

Client: Walsall Council (via High Aims)

Funding Scheme: Walsall Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 (HUG2)

Project Duration: 8 weeks

Completion: 28 March 2025

YES Energy Solutions recently completed a complex retrofit and roofing improvement project at Springhill Court, a 36-flat residential tower block in Walsall. The work was delivered under the Home Upgrade Grant Phase 2 (HUG2) scheme, with the goal of improving energy efficiency, reducing heat loss, and making the building more sustainable for the long term.

What made this project stand out was the use of HUG2 funding—normally aimed at individual homes—for a large, multi-residential building. It was a great opportunity to show what’s possible when you combine collaborative planning, expert delivery, and strong on-site coordination.

What We Set Out to Do

The roof at Springhill Court was in poor condition and offered little to no thermal benefit. On top of that, several flats needed better ventilation and access to low-carbon heating to meet PAS 2035:2019 standards.

So, we focused on four key goals:

Replace the roof structure to improve insulation and durability

Install ventilation and low-carbon heating systems in selected flats

Deliver all works in line with PAS 2035:2019 and health & safety standards

Keep tenants informed and minimise disruption throughout the build

How We Delivered It

We managed the competitive tender process on behalf of Walsall Council and High Aims, inviting five qualified contractors to submit proposals. Tenders were assessed using industry-standard criteria, with support from independent health and safety consultants Kenmac.

Integral Roofing and Maintenance Services were appointed as the main contractor, and to meet the ventilation and heating requirements, we brought in Project Heating Solutions as a specialist subcontractor.

Our team at YES Energy Solutions provided on-site management, quality assurance, tenant liaison, and stakeholder coordination throughout the eight-week delivery phase.

The Results

✅ The project was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget

✅ The new roofing system now offers much better insulation and protection

✅ Ventilation and low-carbon heating measures were installed in the targeted flats

✅ Tenant engagement was positive, and disruption was kept to a minimum

✅ We captured drone footage at different stages to document progress and completion

This project is a great example of how HUG2 funding can be applied to multi-occupancy buildings—proving that with the right planning and delivery partners, these schemes can go beyond the usual single-dwelling approach.

By managing the project from start to finish, YES Energy Solutions helped ensure compliance, efficiency, and value for money—all while supporting our wider mission to reduce carbon emissions, tackle fuel poverty, and improve homes across the UK.
