Energy Saving Upgrades for Almondbury Homes Dec 03, 2014

Thanks to funding from a new Government initiative, hundreds of homeowners in Almondbury (Huddersfield) have the opportunity to improve their properties’ thermal efficiency for a fraction of the cost.

Local installers, YES Energy Solutions are managing a targeted scheme across the area to help local residents save energy and money. The company will be drawing down grant funding from energy companies to contribute towards the installation costs of external solid wall insulation (subject to survey).

According to the Energy Saving Trust, the average household could save around £490 a year on fuel.

External solid wall insulation consists of a series of thermal boards that are connected to the outside walls of a property and then rendered to enhance its visual appearance. It is mainly applied to properties that are unsuitable for standard insulation materials (e.g. like cavity wall insulation).

Traditionally expensive to install at around £10,000, Almondbury homeowners can now take advantage of insulation grants of up to 70-80% of installation costs.  All the work will be funded through the Government’s Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, a new programme which requires the Big Six Energy Companies to support home efficiency improvements in homes that a deemed ‘hard to treat’.

Currently grants for external solid wall insulation are not ‘means tested’, so as long as a property is technically suitable, any homeowner or private renting tenant can take advantage.

YES Energy Solutions’ Project Manager, Clive Wilkinson explains:

"Homeowners need schemes like this to try and stay on top of their bills, especially with these energy price hikes we’re all experiencing. External wall insulation acts like a woolly jumper. It effectively traps heat inside your home. With funding available for the majority of the cost, there has never been a better time to get your home insulated."

YES Energy Solutions is the installer division of Yorkshire Energy Services, who managed the award winning Kirklees Warm Zone scheme throughout 2007-2010.

Representatives from the company will be contacting homeowners in Almondbury over the coming weeks. Depending of the schemes success and the funding available, it is likely that the opportunity will be opened up to other neighbourhoods across Kirklees in the New Year.
