Energy Efficiency Measure Guide: Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)

Important: All installations must comply with current regulations, which are subject to change.

Key points to consider

Someone must be present during installation (you or someone you trust).

The heat pump is installed outside—mounted to the ground or wall—and needs space for airflow.

A hot water tank may be required if not already present.

An air source heat pump (ASHP) is:

  • An ASHP is a heating system that extracts heat from outside air—even in cold weather—compresses it, and uses it to heat your water and radiators.

Common misconceptions / FAQs

“Will it pump cold air in when it’s cold outside?”

  • No. The system extracts heat from outside air, compresses it to increase temperature, and uses that heat to warm your water and radiators.

“Won’t it be noisy?”

  • ASHPs produce noise similar to a microwave or dishwasher—typically between 40–60 decibels.

“Will it be expensive to run?”

  • In a well-insulated home with a low heating tariff, ASHPs can reduce energy bills. Savings depend on usage and property size.

Installation Process:

Before installation

Surveys will assess:

  • Property suitability
  • Size
  • layout
  • outdoor space.

Note: If planning permission is needed, YES will arrange it. Do not apply yourself.

Technical aspects:

  • Space/location: Units are roughly the size of two washing machines side-by-side and need airflow space.
  • Noise regulations: Must not exceed 37 decibels at the nearest neighbour’s window.
  • System compatibility: May require replacing radiators with larger ones or fan convectors.
  • Hot water tank: If not present, surveyors will determine the best location.

During installation

Installation takes 1–5 days, depending on property and existing systems.

Note: Drilling and electrical work will be required.

Work includes:

  • Disconnecting and removing the existing heating system.
  • Mounting and connecting outdoor and indoor units.
  • Installing a hot water cylinder and new radiators.
  • Connecting the ASHP to the cylinder and radiators.
  • Installing a smart heating control system.

After installation

  • Final safety inspection and system sign-off.
  • Demonstration of controls and settings.
  • Guidance on programming for comfort and budget.

Maintenance recommendations

Installers will provide a user guide and maintenance advice.

Regular tasks include:

  • Annual servicing is required—arrange this with your contractor.
  • Cleaning outdoor unit coils and fan blades.
  • Monthly cleaning of air filters; replace every two months.
  • Dusting indoor unit.
  • Checking for damage, leaks, and debris around the outdoor unit.

  • Insurance-Backed Guarantees
  • Building Regulations Certificate (or evidence of competent persons scheme)
  • Claim of Compliance Document
  • Workmanship Guarantee
