Energy Efficiency Measure Guide: Loft Insulation

Important: All installations must comply with current regulations, which may change over time.

Key things to know before installation

  • Someone must be present during the installation — this can be you or someone you trust.
  • Ventilation upgrades may be required alongside insulation.

See our Ventilation Guide for more details. Ventilation | YES Energy Solutions

  • The loft must be cleared before installation.
  • If you need help, assistance can be arranged.

What is loft insulation?

Loft insulation involves adding a thick layer of insulating material to your loft or attic.

It helps:

  • Keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
  • Reduce heating bills.
  • Improve comfort and reduce strain on your heating system.
  • It’s a simple upgrade with long-term benefits for your home and your wallet.

Common misconceptions & FAQs

“It’ll make my house too hot in summer.”

  • Loft insulation regulates temperature year-round — keeping heat in during winter and out during summer.

“I already have insulation, so I don’t need more.”

  • Older insulation may not meet current standards. Topping up to the recommended depth (270mm) can significantly improve efficiency.

“It causes damp or condensation.”

  • When installed correctly with proper ventilation, insulation helps reduce moisture issues.

“I’ll lose loft storage space.”

  • Raised boarding can be installed above the insulation, allowing safe storage without compressing the material.

“It’s a big, messy job.”

  • Most installations are quick and minimally disruptive. Installers are trained to work cleanly and efficiently.

Installation process

Before installation

A survey will assess:

  • Safe access and space for installation.
  • Existing ventilation and any upgrades needed.
  • Presence of condensation or mould.
  • Current use of the loft for storage.

Note: Items should not be stored directly on insulation. Raised platforms may be installed — and could be covered by funding.

The loft must be cleared by the customer.

If you’re unable to move items, speak to the contractors for assistance.

During installation

  • The process usually takes 2–4 hours, depending on loft size and condition.
  • Installers will lay insulation to the correct depth.
  • Existing loft boards may be lifted and repositioned.

Important:

Boards that compress insulation may be permanently removed or replaced with raised boards (if funding allows).

  • Minor electrical work may be needed if mechanical ventilation (e.g., extractor fans) is installed.
  • The team will tidy up and answer any final questions.

Aftercare & maintenance

Loft insulation requires minimal upkeep. To keep it working effectively:

  • Use raised boarding for storage to avoid compressing insulation.
  • Keep ventilation points clear to maintain airflow.
  • No need to adjust or maintain the insulation — just leave it in place.
