When Amelia first spoke to YES Energy Solutions, she was limiting her heating because she was worried about the cost.
She lives in a council property with three children under 14. Because of health needs in the household, the home needs to be kept warmer than average. That meant heating was not optional. It was necessary. But every time the thermostat went up, so did the anxiety about the bill.
The issue was not just high usage. It was uncertainty. She did not know whether she was running the heating efficiently, whether her tariff was right, or whether there were better ways to manage everyday energy use.
So we started with a full energy review.
What we did and why it mattered
First, we carried out a full review of income and entitlement. This meant checking that all earnings, benefits and allowances were being recorded correctly and that she was receiving everything she should. The review highlighted a small improvement of around £65 per year.
Next, we focused on energy efficiency within the home. This included reviewing how heating was set, how long it was running, and whether rooms were being heated in the most effective way. Adjustments to timings and usage patterns were discussed so warmth could be maintained without unnecessary waste. The estimated saving from energy efficiency improvements alone is £440 per year.
We then looked specifically at heating solutions. Because the household needs higher indoor temperatures due to health conditions, advice focused on how to retain warmth more effectively rather than reduce it. Small changes to heating control use and room management are expected to save around £180 per year without reducing comfort.
The largest impact came from behaviour change advice.
We discussed daily routines. How often the oven was used. When heating was turned on and off. How appliances were being used. Rather than asking the family to cut back, we identified smarter ways to use energy around their existing habits.
Behaviour based changes are estimated to reduce costs by around £649 per year.
Altogether, the advice and support provided is estimated to improve the household’s position by £1,334 per year.
That is the equivalent of more than a month’s typical energy costs for many families.
A practical solution that fits around family life
During the review, it became clear that the oven was being used around five days a week. For a busy household with children, that made sense. But ovens are expensive to run.
YES provided an 11 litre dual zone air fryer to give a lower cost cooking option without changing routine and is expected to reduce electricity costs by around £195 per year.
It also cuts carbon emissions by approximately 143 kilograms of CO2 each year. That is similar to the emissions from driving around 500 miles in an average petrol car.
Across all the advice and changes made, the total estimated carbon reduction is 1,048 kilograms per year. That is roughly equivalent to driving more than 3,500 miles.
The outcome
Amelia is no longer limiting heating in the same way.
She understands how to manage it properly. She knows where savings are coming from. She feels more confident that she can keep her home warm without losing control of her bills.
The support was not about telling her to use less. It was about showing her how to use energy better.
For families balancing health needs, children and rising living costs, that shift from anxiety to confidence can be just as important as the financial saving.
If you are worried about heating costs or unsure whether you are using energy in the most effective way, YES Energy Solutions can help you review your situation and find practical changes that work for your home.
