A third of UKs biggest companies set sights on net zero emissions

With the UK government urging more companies to reduce carbon emissions, 30 of the FTSE100 in the have pledged to meet net zero by 2050.

Pledges have doubled in the last five months, with companies that include AstraZeneca, BT Group, Sainsbury’s, and Unilever representing a total market capital of £650 billion.

For the UK to achieve climate change targets by 2050, businesses taking action to reduce their environmental impact is vitally important.

Businesses can aim to cut their emissions in their supply chains and opt for sustainable business practices.

The government plan to introduce new rules on measuring the energy and carbon performance of the UK’s largest commercial and industrial buildings, including office blocks and factories, in England and Wales.

The detail is yet to be released, however the move could provide potential savings to businesses of around £2 billion per year in energy costs with a reduction in annual carbon emissions by over 2 million tonnes.
