Nick Shephersdon - Gas Central Heating

Nick Shepherdson and his family relied on a log burner and electric heaters before they got a fully funded gas central heating system fitted though the Warm Homes Fund scheme, working in partnership with North Lincolnshire & North East Lincolnshire Council.

This meant they’d spend the majority of the winter weekends chopping up wood to ensure they wouldn’t be left in the cold when the winter months approached.

“Before the installation, the temperature of our home was very much hit and miss. One minute we’d be cosy, the next we’d be cold after I’d turned my back for a second and the log fire had gone out.

“Our electric bills were huge – for a period of time last year they shot up to £300 a month! Luckily, because we knew it was coming like every other year, we’d budgeted. But already in comparison to last year our electric bills have dropped massively, so we’ve built up a nice chunk of credit with our energy supplier.”

Nick discovered the scheme after his partner had seen it advertised at work. The family were doubtful that they’d be eligible, but after a quick phone call they were delighted when we got the ball rolling and qualified them the following week.

“We never considered getting a central heating system because we just thought it was really expensive to run and install, and we weren’t convinced by the difference it could make.

“But now, with the difference in our energy bill prices, we know that it would’ve paid for itself in no time!

“I get up at around 3am for work and it used to be an icebox, but now every room is cosy warm thanks to the night setting on the system.

“We can even keep on top of our washing during the week rather than letting it build up for the weekend, because we’ve got plenty of radiators to put our clothes horse near and we don’t need to be in the room to make sure the fire’s still on and drying them.

“The central heating system has just made our life much easier, and is much more reliable and cheaper for us to warm our house.”
