Is my home suitable for loft insulation?

If you have access to you loft and it isn't already insulated, you are likely to be able to install loft insulation which will help you save money on your energy bills.

Even if you have some loft insulation (under 100mm), it may be possible to get this topped up to the recommended thickness of 270 mm which provides the best efficiency in relation to the cost.

Loft insulation is an affordable energy efficiency measure that acts like a blanket that will keep heat in your home.

You can fit loft insulation and still use your loft for storage

Building extra rafters and boarding can allow you to store items in your loft.

The rafters are fitted above the insulation to provide a storage option.

Items should not be placed directly onto loft insulation as this can flatten the mineral fibre wool and reduce its insulating effect.

If you have a small amount of storage and would like to keep it, installers will work round this as long as the space is less that a third of the loft area.

Insulation can be fitted even if the loft has a low ceiling

Lofts that have limited head room can still be insulated as installers don't need to be able to stand up to complete installations.

It is common for installers to stick to a minimum height of approximately 1.5m - most lofts are above this.

I have a room instead of a loft

If you use you loft as a room then your property will not be suitable for loft insulation.

However, you may be able to install room in roof insulation as an alternative.
