How do I use a smart meter?

Request a free smart meter from Smart Energy GB.

Your smart meter will usually be installed in place of your old meter.

You will be able to view your meter readings through your smart electricity and/or gas meter.

When your smart meter is installed, you will also be offered an in-home display, which allows you to view your energy usage whenever you choose.

Your in-home display may vary in appearance to someone else's, but they all show the same information.

Your in-home display shows an accurate reflection of your energy usage in real-time, showing daily, weekly and monthly energy consumption.

You will see your energy usage in kilowatt hours (kWh), as well as pounds and pence.

The display has a gauge which tells you whether your energy usage is low, medium or high.

As your display shows usage over time, you will be able to track where bills may be higher than normal and see which appliances use more energy.

What if I am on a pre-payment meter?

Pre-pay customers are eligible for a smart meter, and will be shown their remaining credit in pounds and pence.

Your display will give you an alert if you are running low on credit.

You will still be able to top up by going to the shop. You can also choose to top up by text, telephone, or via app, depending on your supplier.

Do I have to accept an in-home display?

You will still be able to take a meter reading if you choose not to accept an in-home display. This will will be available on the window of the actual meter.
