Is My Home Suitable for Loft Insulation?

If you can access your loft and it currently has little or no insulation, there’s a good chance your home is suitable for a loft insulation upgrade. Adding insulation is one of the simplest and most cost‑effective ways to reduce heat loss and lower your energy bills.
Even if you already have some insulation in place (anything under 100 mm), it can often be topped up to the recommended depth of 270 mm to improve energy efficiency and comfort in your home.Loft insulation works like a warm blanket, helping your home stay cosy in winter and cooler in summer.

Using Your Loft for Storage

You can still use your loft for storage after insulation is installed. Here’s how:

  • Installers can fit extra rafters and boarding above the insulation.
  • This creates a raised platform, keeping stored items off the insulation so it doesn’t get flattened.
  • Flattened insulation loses its effectiveness, so avoid placing anything directly on top of it.
  • If you already have a small storage area (less than a third of the loft), installers can usually work around it.

Low Loft? Still Fine for Insulation

Even lofts with limited headroom can be insulated. Installers don’t need to be able to stand upright, and most aim for a minimum working height of around 1.5m, which many lofts meet.

What If My Loft Is a Room?

If your loft has already been converted into a room, it won’t be suitable for standard loft insulation. However, you may be able to install room in roof insulation, which is designed specifically for this type of space.
